Pesculuse

Marina di Pescoluse is a seaside resort in the Province of Lecce and a hamlet of Salve, which has been able, in just over twenty years, to win the hearts of the many tourists and travelers who visit Salento.

Marina di Pescoluse it is not only beautiful sea but it is also history, art and culture. Pescoluse is located at the height of the Fano canal, and has a low and sandy coast surrounded by sand dunes. The peculiarity of the beach is that it has a very fine and very clear sand, the finest in Salento, with clear and crystalline waters so as to earn the nickname of Maldives of Salento.

The first settlements between Salve and its marinas date back to 60,000 years ago, as has been amply demonstrated by the finds found in the area, including the very important ones found in the Marini Cave.

In the countryside near Pescoluse there is a dolmen (25,000 BC), evidence of an ancient past. Traces of real urban centers date back to 1400 BC when the Messapi, probably a population of Illyrian or Aegean-Anatolian origin (Balkan area), inhabited these enchanting lands  .

The Messapian population in perennial conflict with the Greek colonies of the same area, was then definitively overwhelmed by the arrival of the Romans, who made the Messapian territory a Roman province.

With the fall of the Roman Empire the area became depopulated and due to the continuous raids of the Saracens the coast lost its ancient importance while the cities of the hinterland gained more and more power.

Thanks to the defensive contribution of the watchtowers erected on the coast, an effective defensive system capable of communicating in a short time the arrival of enemies from the sea, allowing the population to flee or organize resistance to the invaders, the communities on the coasts began to be reborn. Among the many towers in the area we rememberTorre Vado , and Torre Pali .

During the 30s of the twentieth century an important work of reclamation of the Ionian coast begins which will return at the end of the Second World War many of those splendid beaches that we admire today and which are the basis of the tourist success of this splendid corner of Salento.
